Hans Nieswandt
Hans Nieswandt is an author, music critic and DJ for electronic music from Cologne. In the early 90s, he was the co-founder of "Whirlpool Productions" and in 1997 they released their hit single "From Disco to Disco".
The number of (highly recommended) remixes done by him exceeds the number of his own songs. In 1999, Hans even remixed the carnival song "Die Karawane zieht weiter" by local folk group "De Höhner". 2002 saw the release of his first book "plus minus acht" describing his experiences as a DJ. His last solo album "The True Sound Center" was release in November 2004 including the single "Ich vermiss die Zeit (Bleib)".
Hans Nieswandt went on several tours together with the Goethe Institut to represent German music culture abroad. His travelling led him to Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, the Middle East and in November 2006 to South East Asia including a gig in KL's Zouk. In an interview with the Malay Mail he was asked to come up with one-liners for certain music genres. I can totally relate to his one-liner on Hip-Hop - "Used to be so good".
As Cologne-based music critic M.B. rightly said: "Der Hans, der kann's!", I hope that Nieswandt will return for another gig to South East Asia!

Sublime - Reunion 2009
I just figured out today that Sublime had their reunion a couple of weeks ago!
But first things first! Sublime was founded in 1988 in Long Beach, California by Bradley Nowell (vocals and guitar), Bud Gaugh (drums) and Eric Wilson (bass guitar). Their music is a mix of Ska, Punk, Reggae, Hip Hop and Rock. Sublime achieved their breakthrough with their third and last album also called "Sublime". Recording had been finished in early 1996 and the album was released on 30th July 1996. Unfortunately Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 at the Oceanview Motel in San Francisco. So he had not the fortune to witness the amazing success of their album - "Sublime" managed to earn five-times platinum; being sold over 10 million times worldwide! I first got in touch with Sublime relatively late in spring 2001 during my student exchange to Grand Junction, Colorado. My favourite tune is "What I Got" (took me quite some time to get around Malaysian censorship - access on youtube and MTV were denied for this video):

The reunion took place on 28th February this year in Nevada. Bradley Nowell was replaced by a relatively unknown singer named "Rome". The reactions of Sublime fans are mixed: some see it as an outrage and pure commercialisation of the band name, while others developed a liking to it. However, it is not clear yet, if the reunion was a one-off or if there will be a permanent resurrection of Sublime as a band.

Teh Tarik
Nachdem ich dieses Wochenende gefragt wurde, was dass denn für ein komischer "Cafe Latte" neben dem Tandoori Hähnchen wäre, muss ich doch direkt mal klarstellen, dass es sich hierbei um Teh Tarik, sozusagen dem Nationalgetränk Malaysia's, handelt.
Tarik heißt auf Bahasa "ziehen". Der Name rührt daher, dass der mit süßer Kondensmilch gemixte schwarze Tee mehrere Male aus möglichst großer Entfernung von einem Becher in den Anderen geschüttet wird. Dadurch erhält Teh Tarik seine fluffige Schaumkrone. Gleichzeitig hilft es Tee und Kondensmilch besser zu vermischen und das Ganze etwas abzukühlen. Passt hervorragend als Nachmittagssnack zu einem Toast Kaya :-)

Baba Zula - Cecom
Baba Zula from Istanbul describe their music style as "Oriental Dub". The group was established in 1996, but it took them nine more years to receive broad recognition throughout Europe. German-Turkish director Fatih Akin included two of their songs in his movie "Crossing the bridge - The Sound of Istanbul" - as the name already says a tribute to the various kinds of music (from arabesque to indie rock and rap) coming from the city of Istanbul. One of them - my favourite from this movie - is the live version of Cecom featuring Canadian folk singer Brenna MacCrimmon and being produced by Alexander Hacke (bassist of German experimental music group "Einstürzende Neubauten").
Their performances provide the audience with a unique live show experience: It's a mixture of belly dancing, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live animation.

Makan! 12/09
Tandoori Chicken
Ok, ich geb's zu, Tandoori Chicken ist mein absolutes Lieblingsgericht hier drüben. Das scharfe Hähnchen mit der noch viel schärferen Minzsoße, roten Zwiebeln, Gurken und etwas Zitronensaft schmeckt so lecker - das kann man durchaus einmal (manchmal auch zweimal) die Woche essen.
Das Gericht stammt ursprünglich aus der Punjab Region und ist durch die von den Briten nach Malaysia gebrachten Indern hier hin gelangt.
Dabei wird das Hähnchen mit Tandoori Masala (Joghurt mit Chili, Cayenne Pfeffer, Kreuzkümmel, Koriandersamen, Zitronensaft, Knoblauch, Zwiebeln, Ingwer und Salz) mariniert und danach in den Tandoor (Holzkohle-Ofen aus Ton) gesteckt. Als Beilage dient meist ein Naan Brot (ebenfalls aus dem Tandoor) mit verschieden Curries als Dip. Shit, ich krieg Hunger...

Mediengruppe Telekommander
Mediengruppe Telekommander (MTK, bestehend aus Florian Zwietnig und Gerald Mandl) gibt es seit 2001. Ihren Durchbruch schafften sie im Jahr 2004 mit ihrem Debüt Album "Die ganze Kraft einer Kultur". Eigentlich sehen die beiden Jungs ganz unscheinbar aus - sieht man von ihren Silber-Pailletten Anzügen ab. Ihr Musikstil lässt sich nicht wirklich zuordnen und wird mit einer Mischung aus Elektropunk, Indie-Rock und Hip-Hop umschrieben. Am ehesten lässt sich die Musik mit Deichkind vergleichen, wobei man sagen muss, dass Deichkind MTK seit 2005 kopieren und damit leider erfolgreicher sind als das Original.
2006 erschien ihr zweites Album "Näher am Menschen" mit u.a. der genialen Single "Loft oder Liebe".
Im Mai 2009 erscheint MTK's drittes Album (Name steht noch nicht fest). Derzeit kann man sich auf myspace schon mal die Vorab-Single "Endlosrille" anhören. Man darf also gespannt sein!

Poll Results, Leningrad Cowboys and Quote of the Week 11/09
So, the poll has ended and 72% were in favour of me blogging in German. As you can already see from this post - this blog is far from being a democracy! ;-)
I decided to keep it mixed depending on the post topic and my mood. I would like to encourage people to comment on the posts. From the stats I can tell that there are quite some people following this blog, but so far only two have left comments. I guess I need to change my style and become a lot more provoking. We'll see...
For yesterday's post I forgot to include another great cover: The Leningrad Cowboys feat. the Red Army Choir with their version of "Happy Together" (the original comes from "The Turtles" 1967).
The "Total Balalaika Show" in front of a crowd of 70,000 at Helsinki's Senaatintori square in 1993 featured covers from "Sweet Home Alabama", "Stairway to Heaven" to "Yellow Submarine". Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki created a documentary of this concert, after having worked together with the Leningrad Cowboys in 1989 for their debut film "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" (it seems impossible, but I have to get a copy over here in Malaysia to watch it again). Initially the concert in Helsinki was meant as a one off, but with the financial support of several Finnish companies they came up with a tour.

Great Cover Songs
Just yesterday I heard the All-American Rejects cover of Britney Spears' "Womanizer" on the radio. Great job I have to say! :-)
For some songs the cover is just way better than the original. Although it looks like the All-American's try hard to copy Travis with their cover of "Hit me baby one more time!" - my favourite cover!
There are also great covers of non-Britney songs. These include: Cake - "I will survive", Beck's cover of the Korgis 1980 hit "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" and Kruder & Dorfmeister's version of Depeche Mode's "Useless" (found only a short preview on the web).

Makan! 11/09
Nasi Lemak
Nasi Lemak ("fetter Reis") ist definitiv Malaysia's Nationalgericht und wird zu jeder Tageszeit verputzt. An meinem ersten Abend in Malaysia hatte ich Nasi Lemak zum Abendessen und war doch etwas erstaunt als es beim Frühstücksbüffet schon wieder Nasi Lemak gab'. Ich hab generell kein Problem mit scharfem Essen (dann wäre ich auch im falschen Land!), aber Nasi Lemak (Fisch und scharf) zum Frühstück geht gar nicht! Nasi Lemak besteht aus: In Kokosmilch getränktem Reis, Sambal (höllisch scharfe Garnelenpaste), Erdnüssen, ein paar Scheiben Gurken, 1/2 gekochtes Ei und getrockneten Anchovis.

Anfangs hatte ich erwähnt, dass ich ab und an etwas über das malaysische Essen schreiben wollte. Versuchen wir's mal mit 'ner wöchentlichen Rubrik namens Makan! Makan heißt "essen" und ist mit das wichtigste Wort in Bahasa, da sich vieles (nicht alles!) um's Essen dreht - ein mir sehr vertrauter Wesenszug. ;-)
Otak Otak
Otak Otak ist eine Fischpaste (normalerweise Makrele) mit einer Mischung aus verschiedenen Kräutern (Chili, Knoblauch, Zitronengras, Kokosmilch, Gelber Ingwer und Schalotten). Das Ganze wird dann in ein Bananenblatt gewickelt und auf den Grill geschmissen. Trotz des abartigen Namens (Otak heißt Gehirn auf Bahasa; man isst also "Gehirne"), ist Otak Otak ein sehr leckerer, pikanter Snack.

Slumdog Millionaire
"Slumdog Millionaire" von Regisseur Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting" 1996, "The Beach" 2000, aber auch so grottenschlechte Filme wie "Sunshine" 2007) wurde auf der diesjährigen Oscar-Verleihung mit 8 Acadamy Awards ausgezeichnet. Damit steht der Film über Schindler's Liste und Lawrence von Arabien (je 7) und auf einer Stufe mit Ghandi und Amadeus.
Die Handlung erinnert an "City of God" (ging bei den Oscars 2004 übrigens trotz vier Nominierungen leer aus) auf Indisch. Diesmal geht es um den 18-jährigen Jamal - aus Dharavi (dem größten Ghetto Asien's in Mumbai) stammend - der in einer Polizeistation seine Antworten bei "Wer wird Millionär?" rechtfertigen muss, da er als Betrüger abgestempelt wurde. Hierbei wird man per Rückblenden durch sein bisheriges sehr ereignisreiches Leben geführt. Mehr wird erstmal nicht verraten...
Fazit: Boyle schafft ein gelungene Mischung aus "Wer wird Millionär?"- Dauerwerbung, Hollywood und Bollywood (wobei sich das Gesinge und Getanze auf den Abspann beschränkt - hier hatte man Gott sei dank ein Einsehen) mit einem gutem Soundtrack (M.I.A. ist mit "Paper Planes" und "O Saya" vertreten - keine Ahnung warum "Jai Ho" (ein etwas alberner Hindi/Spanisch Mix) von A.R. Rahman und nicht "O Saya" den Oscar für den besten Song kassiert hat). Ohne Zweifel ist "Slumdog Millionaire" ein sehenswerter Film, wurde meiner Meinung nach aber bei der Oscar-Verleihung überbewertet - im Direktvergleich gewinnt "City of God".
Der Trailer ist etwas zu kitschig geworden, da der Film nicht nur aus "Feel Good" Szenen besteht. Kinostart in Deutschland ist der 19.März.

Cassius - Toop Toop & Jack Rock
I first came in touch with Cassius during Notting Hill Carnival in 2006. I haven't experienced haze (pollution caused by burning rain forest in Sumatra) yet over here in Malaysia, but the dark clouds rising from the tons of jerked chicken - this is how it must be!
Although the least you expect is to hear electronic music at this festival (all entrances are packed with huge sound systems with incredible loud speakers playing Dancehall and Reggae music - even "PowPow Movement" from Cologne came!) it was there - one tiny stage and it attracted the masses more than any of the other stages. That time they played "Toop Toop" and it caught me from the spot. After months it was still in my head and finally I figured out that it was done by "Cassius" and released from the album called "15 again". Only then I realised that there are plenty of other good songs by Cassius.
Cassius consists of the two French DJ's "Zdar" & "Boom Bass" and was founded in 1996. "Toop Toop" was released prior to their third album "15 again" in late summer 2006. One of my favourite songs from this very diversified album is "Jack Rock".

After months it was still in my head and finally I figured out that it was done by "Cassius" and released from the album called "15 again". Only then I realised that there are plenty of other good songs by Cassius.
Cassius consists of the two French DJ's "Zdar" & "Boom Bass" and was founded in 1996. "Toop Toop" was released prior to their third album "15 again" in late summer 2006. One of my favourite songs from this very diversified album is "Jack Rock".

Zeltinger Band - Asi mit Niwoh
Im Jahre 1979 - als der FC Titelverteidiger war und ich noch ein Grashalm auf einer großen grünen Wiese - begab es sich, dass ein fülliger glatzköpfiger Ehrenfelder mit gut gepflegtem Schnurri (auch bekannt als Jürgen Zeltinger oder "de Plaat") an Weiberfastnacht im Roxy (die Kombi ist nicht zu übertreffen) sich mit "Rock'n Roll von der Straße" (O-Ton "de Plaat") in die Herzen der Kölner spielte.
Zwei Jahre später 1981 - der FC hatte ein paar Monate zuvor als erste Deutsche Mannschaft im Nou Camp gewonnen; ich war immer noch ein Grashalm - veröffentliche die Zeltinger Band ihr zweites Album "Schleimig" mit der großartigen Single "Asi mit Niwoh". Für mich immer noch eins der besten Lieder für Aggressionsabbau und gegen Heimweh.
Das Intro mit Frank Zander rundet die Sache natürlich noch ab ;-)

Rex the Dog - I Can See You, Can You See Me?
Jake Williams aus London legt seit 2004 unter dem Namen "Rex the Dog" auf und trat im August 2005 auf der Total 6-Party des Kölner Kompakt Labels im Rahmen der c/o pop auf.
Im Sommer 2008 wurde das Debüt-Album "The Rex The Dog Show" veröffentlicht. Leider gibt es auf dem Album nur ein brauchbares Lied "I can see you, can you see me?", was dafür aber richtig viel Potenzial hat. Im Januar diesen Jahres kam dann die Single "Bubblicious" raus. Das Video ist nett anzuschauen, über die Musik kann man geteilter Meinung sein.
