Footy Quote of the Week 18/09

"Sicher, Reina hat das Tor erstklassig erzielt. Aber er durfte die Kugel doch gleich dreimal wie ein Artist hochhalten und dann reinhauen. Das hätte es früher nicht gegeben. Da wäre einer dazwischen gefegt und Billy wäre erst wieder vor seiner alten Haustür in Unna gelandet."
Hermann "der Tiger" Gerland (Kult-Trainer aus Bochum im Exil bei Bayern, seit gestern Co bei den Profis)

Hip Hop - Used to be so good... Positive K

This new rubric focuses on Hip Hip "classics" and was inspired by Hans Nieswandt's claim that Hip Hop used to be so good compared to nowadays - very true if you ask me!

Positive K - I Got A Man 1992

Darryl Gibson - better known as Positive K - scored a major hip-hop hit with "I Got a Man" from the album "The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills" released in 1992. The song peaked at #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1993. Apart from the great - although for this time standard - beat, I just love the lyrics. "What's your man got to do with me? - I got a man! - I'm not trying to hear that, see!"

And again, I had to find a way around Malaysian youtube censorship - how annoying!

Miss Kittin and The Hacker

"Miss Kittin" (Caroline Hervé) was born in 1973 in Grenoble, France. She is one of the most advanced DJanes, vocalists and producers in the field of Electroclash. After having been around as a DJane for a couple of years she teamed up with her partner "The Hacker" (Michel Amato) in 1996/97.

Their first hit was the single "1982" released in 1998, strongly relating to "Kraftwerk's" 80's synthie electronic sound. Miss Kittin's trademark is her cold rap-like singing with her distinct French accent.

Other popular singles include their cover of German alternative rock band "Tocotronic" - "Freiburg", the 2001 single "Stock Exchange" and her collaboration with "Golden Boy" (Swiss Stefan Altenburger) resulting in 2002's "Rippin Kittin".

On 27th March 2009, "Miss Kitten & The Hacker" released their new album "Two", which includes below single "1000 Dreams". The LP title is explained quite simple as it is the second time that the couple came up with a joint album since their debut album called "First Album" in 2001 (one has to admit that creativity is not their strength, when it comes to album titles).

Ais Kacang

Quote of the Week 16/09

"The best thing about religion is that it’s so transparently absurd it can’t possibly last forever. I’m convinced it will only take a small shift in human consciousness for it to be laughed off the planet, and I hope I’m still around when that happens."
(Pat Condell, English comedian)

Waltz with Bashir

"Waltz with Bashir" is an animated documentary by Ari Folman on how he recovers his memories on the Lebanon War 1982.

The movie starts with a conversation in a bar, where Ari is being told by a friend the story of a reoccurring dream of being hunted by 26 dogs - a trauma dating back from his war experience in 1982.

This makes Ari think of his own memories of the Lebanon War - none! In order to recover his memories he meets old friends and comrades that fought with him that time.

Once having dug into his memories, he has his own reoccurring dream which is connected to the massacre of Sabra and Schatila in Beirut on 16.-18.September 1982.

In late August 1982, General Bachir Gemayel had been elected as president of Lebanon. He had a Christian background and his aim was to unite all Lebanese people no matter of their religion. On 14.September he and 25 of his Kata'ib party members were killed in a bomb attack. Suspecting Palestinians to have enforced this attack, Christian Phalange militias went to the Palestinian refugee camps Sabra and Schatila in southern Beirut and killed 2,000 civilians within three days. The Israeli military had surrounded the camps and were well aware of what was happening inside. Instead of preventing the genocide, they even supplied the Phalange militias with ammunition. Because of this incident, Israelian minister of defence, Ariel Scharon, had to step down after a trial in 1983. The real initiator of the bomb attack on Bashir is said to be the Syrian secret service.

"Waltz with Bashir" was nominated at this years Academy Awards for "Best foreign language film" and won one Golden Globe in the same category.

It is certainly one of the best animated movies I've seen so far and the only animated documentary. It is a shame that this movie has not been released in Malaysia - all because of stupid politics! For those who are not aware: as a Muslim country, Malaysia is not supposed to show Israelian movies - even if these are anti-war movies (as in this case). At least, I have ways to get around this censorship ;-p.

Makan! 15/09

Sago Pudding mit Palm-Sirup

Sago Pudding - hhmmmmm, lechz.

Sehr, sehr lecker! :-) Ein Rezept findet sich hier.

DJ Tocadisco - TOCA 128.0 FM

34-year old Roman Böer better know as DJ Tocadisco is based in Cologne since 2000. "Tocadisco" is Spanish for "turntable". Tocadisco released his first single "Nobody (Likes The Records That I Play)" in 2004, which became a clubbing hit reaching #34 in the German billboard charts. He was voted one of the best newcomers in 2004 by music magazine "Raveline". After releasing plenty of remixes (his remix of "Walking Away" by "The Egg" became popular all over the world in 2006 through an ice-skating car), Tocadisco came up with his debut album "Solo" in January 2008. Below single "streetgirls" is one of my favourites - the whole album is worth listening and quite diversified.

On 16th February this year, Tocadisco finished his second album "TOCA 128.0 FM" in London (release date to be confirmed). The first single called "DA FUCKIN NOIZE" was released on 31st March.

I have to admit that this one is a bid dull (at least the chic is hot :-), but let's see how the album turns out. A recent interview with Tocadisco on his new album can be found here.

Where the Hell is Matt?

I believe, some of you might already know it, but for those who don't, this might be interesting.

Matt Harding is a 32-year old bloke from Connecticut, who quite his job as video game designer in 2003 and started to travel the world. As having a picture of yourself with some popular tourist site is nothing too special and he was famous amongst his friends for his bad dancing, they persuaded him to dance in front of those sites. Matt released a first compilation of his bad dancing in 2005 which became over time a viral hit. Encouraged by this success, he came up with another video in 2006. As dancing alone was still a bit dull, he decided to dance with other people around the world in his third video. It was released in June 2008 and became a hit on youtube with over 20 million views!

My favourite is his dancing with the Huli Wigmen in Papua New Guinea :-)

Although Matt doesn't intend to send a message across, mine is this one - if you're a couch potato, move your butt and travel!!! It's worth it!

Buraka Som Systema

"Buraka Som Systema" was established in 2006 by João Barbosa (Li'l John), Rui Pité (DJ Riot), Andro Carvalho (Conductor) und Kalaf Ângelo. Buraka is a ghetto district in Lisbon and "Som Systema" is Portuguese for "Sound System". Their music is called Kuduro (literally meaning "hard bum"), which is a mix of electronic music, rap and traditional music from Angola. Kuduro dance reminds of break dance, but more of the Peter Crouch kind.

While Buraka Som Systema released their first EP called "From Buraka to the World" in 2006, their first studio album "Black Diamonds" was released in November 2008 with the single "Kalemba" reaching the top spot in the Portuguese billboard charts and 6th in the UK in January 2009. At the MTV Europe Music Awards they won in the category "Best Portuguese Act". Their latest single "Aqui Para Vocês" was released on 10th March - enjoy!

Makan! 14/09

Hainanese Chicken Rice
